Raiders Look to Begin Again
5 January 2006 | C Whitmer
Most NFL head coaches enter the league knowing full well that the term “job security” does not apply to their position. At the end of every NFL season, the teams that finish at the bottom of the barrel go back to the drawing board and calculate which changes need to be made to ensure improvement for the coming year. And many times that change begins at the top.
Only days after the 2005 regular season came to an end, a total of Six NFL teams decided that new leadership was a necessary. Among them: the 4-12 Oakland Raiders.
After two sub-par years as the Raiders’ head coach, Norv Turner was handed the proverbial pink slip, and will be seeking employment somewhere other than Oakland. Turner’s 9-23 record, which included a disappointing 0-6 divisional record in 2005, was evidence enough for owner Al Davis to terminate Turner’s three year contract a season early.
So the Oakland Raiders are again looking to restart... Again.
Despite the difficulties the Raiders have had over the past few seasons, one thing that cannot be questioned about this team is fan loyalty. The Raider Nation’s die-hard support for their team has remained undiminished, and whoever is hired as Oakland’s next head coach will inherit a rabid fan base fiercely dedicated to the silver and black.
The 2006 football season will be brand new for players, coaches and fans alike. Despite who is brought in as the new head coach, members of the Raider Nation will keep constant pressure on the Oakland organization to bring home the Lombardi Trophy.
