Trojan Hoarse: Heisman Is Reggie Bush's To Lose
by: Shane Carney | SportsFan Magazine | Wednesday, November 23, 2005
After Saturday night's game against Fresno State, not giving the Heisman to Reggie Bush would be grand theft. Although Matt Leinart and Vince Young are both extremely talented individuals, there is no argument against Bush.
Bush is currently leading the nation with 8.6 yards per carry. Not 3.6, not even 6.6, but 8.6 yards per carry. Over the course of eleven games, this average sounds impossible to maintain, but Reggie is doing just that.
In Saturday's 50-42 victory over the sixteenth-ranked Fresno State Bulldogs, Bush accumulated 513 total yards. The 513 yards (294 rushing, 68 receiving, and 151 return) broke the PAC-10 record and was the second highest total in NCAA history.
Against the Bulldogs, Matt Leinart completed twenty-two of his thirty-three passes for 200 yards and a touchdown to Steve Smith. He could have thrown for a lot more yards, but Bush was completely dominating all aspects of the game.
Five of the Trojans' six touchdowns came on the ground this week as Bush had two, LenDale White had two, and Matt Leinart added one QB sneak.
Fresno State stayed in the game deep into the fourth quarter. They actually had the lead several times during the game. A poorly orchestrated pass defense by the USC secondary allowed the Bulldogs to pick up several large plays.
The same secondary that was getting beat over and over again by Fresno State made up for some of their mistakes, however, as they intercepted four passes.
The game was the first home game where the Trojans gave up more than twenty-one points this season. Their fifty points was the sixth time they have scored fifty or more this season.
The Trojans have now won thirty-three straight games overall and twenty-six consecutive home games.
As exciting as this game may have been for Fresno State and their fans, USC is still looking at that December 3 game against UCLA.
To be perfectly honest, I and many of the USC fans are tired of hearing about how good UCLA is. Early in the season when UCLA was still undefeated, they could make that argument. Trust me; they made it more than you could ever believe.
They aren't undefeated anymore though, thanks to their 52-14 loss to the national football powerhouse, the University of Arizona.
Did that stop UCLA fans?
They still think that UCLA is going to come into the Coliseum and beat the Trojans. I don't want to make any guarantees because, frankly, I don't need to.
The game on December 3 will speak for itself.
